"Behavior in the classroom and around the school is exemplary. Pupils confirm that they feel safe in a school that is free from bullying and racism and where there is a caring and supportive culture.” (OFSTED July 07)

The School

“The enthusiastic staff are dedicated, caring and approachable and as a result, the pupils are thriving.” (Ofsted July 2007)

We have 14 classes in school; two Foundation Stage, four Key Stage one, four each in lower and upper Key Stage two.

There is a computer suite, library, creative arts room and Languages room. A large hall with resources for drama, music and sport. Outside we have a large field and two playgrounds. There is a KS1 adventure trail, Foundation Stage play area and an established environmental area.

The School Day

Times of school sessions:

Morning: 9.00 am to 12.20 pm

Afternoon: 1.20 pm to 3.20 pm

Teachers are in classrooms to receive pupils from 8.45 am. For safety reasons we ask that pupils do not arrive at school before this time. We encourage children to say goodbye to their parents in the playground and to come into school independently as they would after a break time.

Lunchtime Arrangements and Snacks

Pupils can choose between bringing a packed lunch or order hot meals. The meals must be ordered by the Thursday prior to the week in which they have the meal.

The school has application forms for claims for free lunches if required.

A packed lunch should be brought in a named container and any non-fizzy drink in a sealed container. No glass allowed.

We are a healthy school and as such expect all children to eat healthily when in school. We discourage crisps and high sugar snack bars.

A mid-morning snack of fruit or another ‘healthy’ food is permitted. Children in KS1 receive a free piece of fruit everyday.

All children have access to drinking water and are encouraged to bring a named, clear, plastic water bottle to drink during the day.

Collective Worship

Daily acts of collective worship take place either at a whole school level or within year groups. Worship includes opportunities such as prayers, songs, stories, drama and time to reflect. It is hoped that the inclusive policy allows all children and staff to take part within the framework of their and their families beliefs with out losing integrity, but any parent has the right to withdraw their child after discussion with the Headteacher.

Homework

Children are encouraged to bring home reading books, learn spellings, tables and carry out investigative tasks. They also are asked to research information related to the projects which they are undertaking. Research projects are optional but encouraged and teachers set one project per term. It is expected that all children will spend about 15 to 25 minutes a night doing these on-going home-study tasks. During the latter part of their KS2 career there is an expectation that children will put in more time in home study to prepare them for transfer to secondary school and aid their primary school learning.

The full homework policy is available on our website.

Learning Difficulty and/or Disability

It is estimated that approximately 20% of all children will have learning difficulties at some stage in their childhood, either before entering school or during their school years. In most cases their difficulties are expected to be modest and their needs can be met by such means as differentiated work in the classroom or small group support.

In some cases children’s learning difficulties will be prolonged and complex and will require the advice of a variety of professionals including educational psychologists, learning, emotional and behavioural support services, school doctors etc. to assess how their needs can best be met (or what help is needed to enable them to overcome their difficulties).

Parents will of course be informed and involved at all stages if their child or children have special needs and will be offered the opportunity to discuss the situation with the Headteacher.

Teaching and non-teaching staff have received training on identifying and supporting specific Special Needs conditions and writing Individual Education Plans.

The school has reasonable wheelchair access to most areas of the school. All classrooms are on ground level and the Governors ensure full participation in everyday events for any child with any disability. Disabled toilet provision is available and additional school personnel are available to support any child in a given activity if needed, so that they have equal opportunity of curricular access.

One classroom is equipped with an amplification system for hearing impaired pupils and the hall is amplified for clearer audibility for all pupils and staff.

Assessment

We carry out assessment soon after the children start school at whatever age. Thereafter the assessment is on-going by the teacher with various standardised assessment activities taking place throughout the child’s school career. Children will be working towards National Curriculum levels and assessment is made accordingly. At the end of Year 2 and Year 6 when national Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are taken, results are reported formally. At other times progress is reported through termly parent consultations and an end of year written report. Each child has learning targets that they are working towards derived from current assessment and future learning needs. These are reviewed with parents at consultations and pupils as needed.

Reporting To Parents

We place great value on a positive and constructive relationship with all parents. To this end we encourage parents to visit school, help in the classrooms and become involved in their child’s education in a variety of ways.

During the school year, there are many opportunities to visit school and see children’s progress. All class teachers hold regular parent/teacher interviews each term when they are available to discuss your child’s progress or any queries you may have. You will be supplied with appointment slips to arrange the time and date of such interviews at the start of each term. However we would like to stress that in the event of your wishing to see your child’s teacher urgently or at short notice, please contact the member of staff by phone or letter and they will make every effort to see you as soon as possible.

In the summer term parents are sent a written report on their child’s achievement and progress in all areas of the curriculum with a further opportunity given to discuss the contents of the report with their child’s teacher before the end of the Summer Term.

This report will contain a detailed teacher assessment of learning within all National Curriculum subjects, R.E and other areas of school life.
