Our curriculum is organised to ensure entitlement of a broad and balanced curriculum. We strive to offer a rich and exciting and fun curriculum that allows all children to develop as learners and to reach their potential.
We endeavour to promote a real enjoyment for learning and ensure that our pupils have the ability to know how to improve and the skills to implement these improvements.
Linguistic Development
(incorporating Reading, Writing, Drama, ICT, Speaking and listening and MFL)
In developing the children’s linguistic ability we provide opportunities for the children to express themselves orally and in writing to develop their range of vocabulary and understanding. They will work to develop their reading comprehension and foster a love of reading.
Their understanding and use of grammar is systematically developed.
ICT is used across the curriculum to communicate and word process.
All children will be taught Spanish and French during their time at the school.
Mathematical Development
(incorporating Maths, Science, ICT)
The children are taught a range of strategies for mental and written calculation. These are then applied throughout the curriculum and problem solving activities.
The daily maths input will focus upon the full range of mathematical skills and understandings in line with national expectations.
Pupils are encouraged to look for alternative methods for calculations, explain their thinking and draw conclusions.
ICT is used to interpret, represent and interrogate data.
Personal Development
(incorporating RE, PSHE and citizenship)
Our children are taught the skills to work with others, sharing and cooperating. They are encouraged to be empathetic and show a tolerance of the views and needs of others, whilst being able to manage and understand their own feelings. We feel this helps to develop their confidence and self esteem, as well as their social skills and the ability to work both independently and within a group. Teaching the children these skills gives them the responsibility and maturity to become well rounded young citizens.
Knowledge and Understanding
(incorporating Science, RE, ICT, Design and Technology, History, Geography)
We encourage the children to generate questions in order to develop their learning further. We support the children in developing their understanding by researching and collecting new information, predicting and drawing conclusions, making links in their learning and comparing and evaluating their results. The children are also taught the skills to recall factual information and to apply this knowledge to their work.
Creativity Development
(incorporating Music, Art, Drama, Dance, Design and Technology and ICT)
All children are encouraged to employ their imagination and bring their own ideas to their work, then to extend and build upon these ideas to beyond the obvious. This takes place within a range of contexts, including role play, dance, art, music and drama.
The children are taught to design create and evaluate their work. They will use a variety of materials within a range of contexts.
A key skill that we promote is to encourage the children to think about how they can overcome problems when faced with them.
Physical Development
(incorporating PE, Dance)
We enable our children’s physical development to progress by teaching them the relevant skills to coordinate and progress their Gross motor skills (balance/ kicking/ throwing) and Fine motor skills (scissors/ mouse control/ruler/paint brush). This is taught through a range of activities including: Swimming, dance, athletics, skills within invasion games and net/wall games. The children are also aware of safety issues in relation to PE and what is needed to lead a healthy lifestyle. The children are given opportunities to produce sequenced work in both dance and gym and to work in team and paired situations.
Visits/ Enrichment
We feel that children learn best from ‘first hand’, practical experiences. To support this we make visits and visitors an integral part of our curriculum. These are well planned to ensure that they relate directly to current topics being covered. All KS2 pupils have the chance to take part in a residential visit every year.
Year 3/4 go to the PGL centre in Caythorpe and Year 5/6 to either Malham or Northumberland.
Extra curricular clubs
A range of extra curricular clubs are on offer to the children, these take place at lunchtimes or after school. The range of clubs on offer depends on the time of year and includes football, netball, athletics, recorders, choir, science, art, school newspaper, eco club and drama. We try to ensure that we have something for everybody!
Sex and Relationship Education
Within sex and relationship education, we aim to provide children with the knowledge and skills to cope with the physical and emotional changes of growing up.
More sensitive issues are covered in years 5/6, including puberty and a basic understanding of reproduction.
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from any of these sessions if they feel it is necessary.
